Britton
Days seemed to fly by so quickly, and before she knew it her high school career would be just a blur. Now that was something she was actually looking forward to. No more school meant that teachers attempting to get her to do homework, or even schoolwork, would be over. It meant that all her adversities that had been overcome would finally be coming to a halt. All this talk about her issues with being able to read and write would cease, and she could live in the world of the normal people. But there was little that was normal about her. She was destined for greatness, little did she know. How many other people could produce such magic with barely a snap of a finger, with a mutter of a spell?
Hard to believe that a sixteen year old girl had just two years plus a few months left until she was out of high school. How was this possible? With her birthday being the last day of the year, she had just missed the cutoff for the grade below by a little less than a few hours. While most people in her grade would be turning seventeen (if not already seventeen), Britt had just turned sixteen. But Britt had grown accustomed to being the youngest in her grade. In fact, it had turned less into a problem and more into an advantage as the years have gone by. And it just so happened if she failed a grade, it would not look too bad on her part, it just meant she would be the same age as her peers. But failing was not an option in her family. It was the worst thing that could happen. One of her brothers had almost failed his sophomore year of high school and her parents had chastised him until his grades were pulled up. Britt’s parents were constantly on her about her grades. But it was not her fault she sucked at school. It was the stupid dyslexia. Which is why she had taken all of those hard courses during her freshman year so she could relax a little more this year, it gave her more time to be…her. This year she had taken almost all easy classes. Her hardest class was English, just because it involved reading and writing. Cheer and soccer took up most of her schedule, thankfully. And she also was in advanced math, it was not numbers she had a problem with, just letters.
Looking at her phone, Britton sighed. One of her older siblings had dropped her off this morning, apparently she couldn’t be trusted to drive herself. She had just gotten her license; she didn’t see what was wrong with her being able to drive. Her siblings seemed to think otherwise. It had already been an exhausting morning. Once again her father was on call on night so he had spent the night at the hospital. Her mother had decided to have a girls night with some friends, so Britt had been left pretty much alone. Well if you count being alone with the little kitten she had gotten for her birthday. Britt was already attached to the little calico kitten. Little Anniston had followed her around, and eventually Britton had caved in and let her curl up in her side to sleep last night. The little kitten was just so innocent and cute, how could she resist that face? Her mother had told her not to let the cat sleep on her bed but Britt figured that since her mother was elsewhere, who would know? Plus it felt good to have someone nearby and the bond strengthened between human and animal. Her mother was gone quite often so even if Anniston became accustomed to sleeping on Britt’s bed, it would be alright. Just as long as the tail of the kitten did not find its way up her nose, that could be a little uncomfortable.
If not for her older sibling practically pulling her out of bed and telling her to get dressed, Britt most likely would have gone to school late, if at all. She was still tempted to go home now…it was not that far of a walk. She had to run for cheerleading all the time, a few miles was not much to worry about. Oh wait. Cheerleading. That is why she had come to school. It was the day of recruitment for cheerleaders next year. And as captain, it was Britt’s job to help judge tryouts. Oh boy, what a fun way to spend her afternoon…being a judgmental bitch. Then again, she could make it fun. Maybe she could drag a few friends into coming along. And that is exactly why she was wearing the cheerleading uniform instead of her regular clothing. The silver, white, and blue uniform was the signature cheerleading uniform, showing off just a bit of her stomach. Wearing the uniform made her feel powerful. It gave her the authority of being in the popular crowd at school…if she wanted to be. But sometimes she was content just hanging out with everyone else.
Not only was she on the cheerleading team, but Britton was on the soccer team. It was quite rare to see Britton not in her soccer jersey or cheerleading uniform. It seemed like every day there was a soccer game or some event in which she would cheer. And it was a requirement of both teams that the proper uniform was worn at all times. Sometimes she could get away with wearing her soccer jersey over her cheerleading uniform, and having the soccer shorts on also. The problem was the shoes. Both required quite the difference. But it really was just too hard to have both on at the same time. It was really fun the days the two sports would collide, causing her to bring both and change quickly. It just meant extra bags for her to carry. One for cheer, one for soccer, and of course her backpack, and people wonder how she is in shape. All they need to do is pick up the bags she has to carry. Thankfully soccer tryouts for next year were not for a few weeks. Britt was going to be co-captain of the soccer team for next year along with her cheerleading captaincy. The previous soccer captain was a senior this year and had selected Britt to replace her. But Britt had cheerleading to captain and felt she would need help, thankfully she was given a co-captain that was quite reliable and competent. She still had time with soccer tryouts, and she didn’t have a game until later in the week, so the soccer uniform was not necessary until then.
Britton sighed as she sat on the outer wall of the school, her back propped up with the help of her cheer bag. No one normal would be at the school this early. She was almost half tempted to take a nap. But really, her sibling had dropped her off thinking that getting her there early would help her catch up with the school work she had missed. Ahh yes, that was another thing about Britt. Britton had practically no immune system. It took so little to make her sick. It had been the cause of her missing the entire week of school last week, the first week back from winter break. Her body had taken so much time to recover and it was quite possible she shouldn’t be here now. But she could not miss today. She had to be there for cheer tryouts. She did not trust anyone else when it came to her team. Only the best got in, and she made sure of that. Luckily this year there were not many seniors graduating so really Britt only needed to fill six slots. The teenager was going through her mind the names she had seen on the signup sheet before school let out. It was probably doubled in size by now. Maybe she would have to stretch tryouts out more than the three days she had planned. It might be better to do it the entire week. Well that is a thought. But it would also mean she would have to give up every afternoon this week. Wait. That is not a bad idea. It meant she did not have to go straight home and listen to her parents fuss over her, asking if she was well enough to do this or that. Sometimes having a doctor for a father was more of a curse than a blessing. The only time it really came in handy is when Britt was super sick and did not want to move, she could just ask her father to diagnose her.
Britton knew she was forgetting something, she could see it in her mind but could not quite put her finger on what was missing. Knowing her, it was probably something super important. Blinking her blue eyes she looked around her. She had her cheer bag and her backpack, and she had on her uniform and the right shoes. What was she forgetting? Well this would slowly drive her insane. Oh well, it must not be too important if she does not remember. Surely it was not anything of importance that would change her life if she forgot it. She had everything that was important to her, her phone, cheer stuff, her iPod. And there was no way she was doing any make-up work. A whole week’s worth was way too much for her to even think of accomplishing. She did well doing her schoolwork each day, and the occasional homework.
The young teenager made herself comfy and closed her eyes, putting in her earbuds. This would drown out any sounds that could be approaching her anytime soon. If anyone important needed her, they knew how to get her attention. Plus, there was at least an hour before school began. There was no way she would be doing anything productive until then. Knowing Britton she probably would not even do anything productive while school was in session. She was already planning her day in her mind: Nap time in history, which was the middle of the day, and right after lunch, drawing random sketches in English…..it was not like she was going to understand how to do any of it anyway, and actually paying attention in math. Math was first, followed by English, then cheer, followed by lunch, history and the other classes she would end up skipping so she could start auditions. At least she had a legitimate reason to skip, and she was excused. That sounded like a perfect day. Now all she had to do was relax. She could handle that, for a bit. After all, she had not had anything caffeinated this morning to wake her up.
